BLUEFIELD, Va. - University of Pikeville softball wrapped up their 2025 season with a doubleheader split with Bluefield Monday afternoon. Softball finishes the season with a record of 15-28 (8-20 AAC).
Game 1: Bluefield 5, UPIKE 2
Bluefield struck first by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. UPIKE cut their lead in half in the top of the second when Chloe Calton sent a fastball over the fence for a solo home run.
The Rams added another three runs in the bottom of the third and led 5-1 after three. Two innings later, Kaden Dunlap led off the inning with a walk then made it to third after a double by Clara Blair. Dunlap scored the next at-bat after an RBI single by Dani Crum.
Crum stole second to get runners in scoring position with one out by neither Crum nor Blair scored. Neither team scored again, and the Rams took game one.
Game 2: UPIKE 7, Bluefield 6
Madison Mullins led off the third with a single, then scored three at-bats later after a two-out triple by Maddie Horn for the game's first run. The game's second run came an inning later after Balea McCoy drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The Rams struck back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and another three in the fifth. UPIKE trailed 6-2 after five innings but would not go away. After a scoreless fifth, UPIKE got the offense going in the sixth.
Claudia Maness and Haleigh Jones hit back-to-back singles to open the sixth. After the next two batters were retired, Balea McCoy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Crum cut Bluefield's lead in half with a two-run single, then Horn put the Bears up 7-6 with a three-run home run.
UPIKE held on in the seventh and won 7-6 to earn a split in the series. Calton was credited with a win in the circle. Horn finished the game with four RBIs. Horn, along with Maness and Jones, all had two hits in game two.
