CIU eliminates Bears from AAC tourney

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The season's first shutout came at the worst of times for the University of Pikeville, which was eliminated from the 2025 WinWon AAC baseball tournament on Thursday morning with a 4-0 loss to Columbia International University.

The Bears' season ended with a record of 27-22. UPike had gone 58 consecutive games since last being held off the scoreboard, which came on April 13, 2024 at the hands of Truett McConnell.

The Bears had won three of four against the Rams entering Thursday's game.

After leaving the bases loaded in the first – something they'd repeat in the fourth – the Rams scored in the second. Second baseman Colton Lopez walked and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of left fielder Bradley Garland to make it 1-0.

They added two more in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back singles by first baseman Graham Peeler and right fielder Mason Turner started the frame and both scored on a double to left by designated hitter Eric Doyon to push the lead to 3-0.

The Bears, meanwhile, were struggling on offense, and by the end of the sixth inning had posted four baserunners with three of them having been erased by ground ball double plays to keep them off the scoreboard.

The Rams tacked on one more run in the ninth inning. It was the result of a single to center by centerfielder Maurice Gomez, who later scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Noah Davis.

The Bears had four hits in the game, all of them singles. They were recorded by catcher Tanner Gerosa, second baseman Cam Revolt, shortstop Francis Subero and centerfielder Riley Paulino.

Isaac Berry (4-4) pitched the first five for the Bears, allowing five hits and striking out three. Caleb Morrison followed for three innings, striking out four while allowing only a single hit. Richter Castillo closed it out in the ninth.
