Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Rick Bentley

Women's soccer gives Taylor first win

The Shane Taylor era of University of Pikeville women's soccer began Saturday evening with a shutout win, as the Bears blanked Carolina (N.C.) University 3-0.

UPike held the Bruins to four shots on goal in the win while recording 10 of their own.

Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Neveeh Brown opened her career as a Bear with the shutout, going all 90 minutes in net.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead to the half. The season's first goal came only eight minutes in when sophomore Rebekah Christopher scored off a pass from junior Jayla Boyd. Christopher, who led the team in scoring last year, made it 1-0.

The next goal came in the 44th minute, when junior Charlene Lofqvist was on the scoring end of a corner kick by junior Anna Dudas and a pass from junior Kylie Ritter.

UPike scored again in the 51st minute when sophomore Sara Ritter scored after a block by Carolina keeper Laurel Collins bounced her way, making the lead 3-0.

Christopher and Lofqvist led the Bears with three shots on goal each, while Ritter and Boyd added two each.

The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio, to play Shawnee State University. The contest is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
