PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – A pair of second half goals powered the University of Pikeville women's soccer team to a 2-1 road win over Shawnee State Saturday afternoon.
The first two shots on goal of the match came off the feet of Kiera Bailey and Jayla Boyd in the 4' and 5', respectively. Allyson Gonzales made her first start in net and turned away the first SSU shot on goal she faced in 10'.
The next shot on goal came in the last seconds of the first half when SSU's Lucie Ashkettle fired a shot on frame. Gonzalez turned away Askettle's attempt on frame to keep SSU off the scoresheet in the first half.
UPike finished the first half with five shots and Shawnee State had two. Despite both teams getting decent looks on goal, they went to the half scoreless.
Shawnee State came out of the half and netted the first goal. SSU's Ashkettle, off an assist from Robyn Drinkwater, scored 22 seconds into the second half to give the Shawnee State Bears a 1-0 lead.
Askettle had another shot on net that was turned away by Gonzalez in the 60'. After Gonzalez's save, UPike countered and leveled the score after Jayla Boyd connected with Sara Ritter to make it 1-1. Six minutes after Sara Ritter's equalizer, Charlene Lofqvist put UPike ahead for good with a goal in the 66'.
Shawnee State made one final push that included a shot on goal from Ashkettle, but Gonzalez was there to make the save and preserve the win for UPike. Gonzalez finished the match with five saves on six shots for her first win in net.
Saturday's win was UPike's first-ever win over SSU and moves UPike to 2-0 on the season. Next up for Coach Shane Taylor's squad is a trip to Beckley, W.Va., for a 5:00 p.m. match against WVU-Tech.
