BECKLEY, W.Va. - University of Pikeville women's soccer wrapped up non-conference play with a 3-3 tie at West Virginia Tech Wednesday evening.
WVU-Tech scored the first goal of the match just six minutes in when Julia Silva scored off a feed from Rocio Gutierrez. UPike answered with a game-tying goal 61 seconds later, driving deep into Tech territory for a corner kick. Sara Ritter took the corner and connected with Jayla Boyd for the equalizer.
The next shot attempt from UPike went high over the crossbar while the next shot attempt by WVU-Tech landed in the back of the net. Silva netted her second goal of the match, this time off an assist from Sophie Quinlan. Silva's second goal of the first half would be the final goal of the first half, and the Golden Bears took a 2-1 lead to the locker room.
UPike turned up the heat after the 60'. Over the next nine minutes, the Bears had a pair of corner kicks and shot attempts before Jayla Boyd leveled the score at 2-2 at the 68:38 mark of the second half. Boyd's second goal of the match was assisted by Charlene Lofqvist.
The tie was short-lived as the Golden Bears retook the lead five minutes later when Victoria Pare found the back of the net. Just like the tie, Tech's lead was also short-lived when Kylie Ritter scored the tying goal in the 78'.
UPike and Tech both had shot attempts after the 80', with Silva going for a hat trick but the shot attempt sailed wide left. UPike's last shot attempt came off the foot of Ruby D'Arcy in the 86', but WVU-Tech's Sandra Garcia Quilez made the save to preserve the 3-3 tie.
With Wednesday's draw, UPike's record now stands at 2-0-1 headed into conference play. UPike will play its 2025 AAC opener Saturday when the Bryan College Lions come to Bob Amos Park. Kickoff for UPike and Bryan is set for 12 p.m.
