A 21-point third quarter was enough to lift No. 20 Campbellsville University to a 37-34 win over the University of Pikeville on Saturday evening at Citizens Bank Field in Campbellsville.
Â
UPike led 20-9 at the half but trailed 30-20 one quarter later.
Â
The Bears wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. The opening drive of the game lasted nine plays and covered 75 yards, ending when
Xavier Malone connected with
Brandon Newton for the final 20.
Â
Isaac Smith's kick moved the lead to 7-0 with 10:44 left in the opening period.
Â
Campbellsville got on the scoreboard when its ensuing drive resulted in a 46-yard field goal by Colin Fratus with 8:30 on the clock. The Tigers took their first lead of the game before the period ended when Jerrod Johnson intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for the score.
Â
The conversion run failed, leaving the Tigers on top 9-7 with 53 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Â
UPike scored two more times in the second quarter, although Campbellsville kept it out of the end zone both times. Smith nailed field goals covering 19 and 33 yards, the second coming with only 22 seconds left in the half, to put the Bears on top 13-9.
Â
But that didn't end the scoring for the Bears before halftime. The Tigers lined up for a field goal on the final play of the half, but freshman cornerback Damian Watts blocked it. Senior cornerback
Marshawn Boyden picked it up and ran 64 yards for the score, and the Bears took a 20-9 lead to the half.
Â
The third period, however, belonged to the Tigers. They scored three touchdowns in the quarter, two coming on passes by Jett Engle.
Â
The first came on a 69-yard pass to Roland Hazard Jr., and the third when he hit Ashton Tucker for 19 yards. The middle score came on a one-yard run by Archelaus Smith.
Â
By the time it was over, the Tigers had turned their 11-point halftime deficit into a 10-point lead with 15 minutes left to play.
Â
UPike pulled back within a score early in the fourth period when Malone and Newton hooked up again, this time covering the final seven yards of an eight-play, 64-yard drive that took 3:40 off the clock.
Â
Smith's PAT came with 13:35 left and got the Bears within three at 30-27.
Â
Campbellsville answered with a 10-play, 78-yard drive that ended when Engle connected with Easton Barlow for an 18-yard touchdown with 4:35 left, pushing the lead back to 10 at 37-27.
Â
UPike got seven back when
Amon Williams carried from two yards out with 28.4 seconds left. The score ended a 14-play, 75-yard drive, and Smith cut the lead to 37-34.
Â
But the Tigers recovered the on-side kick to end UPike's chance for the win.
Â
Malone finished 37 of 53 for 437 yards, his second straight 400-yard passing game. Two receivers hit the century mark on 10 catches, as Newton covered 132 yards and
Jordan Williams 115.
Â
Amon Williams led the rushing attack with 73 yards on 21 carries. His late touchdown extended his streak of games with a touchdown to 10.
Â
Sophomore safety
Quincy Clark led the UPike defense with seven tackles, four of them solos.
Â
UPike will begin the home portion of its schedule on Saturday night, hosting Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. Â Â
