Women's Soccer draws even at SMC

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – University of Pikeville women's soccer drew a scoreless, 0-0 tie with Spartanburg Methodist College Saturday morning.
The Pioneers had the first shot attempt of the match in the 5th minute. SMC's Camila Moscoso fired a shot on frame but was turned away by UPike's Navaeh Brown. Two minutes later, Charlene Lofqvist hit the crossbar for the Bears' first shot of the game. Lofqvist had another shot blocked in the 9th minute, then Rebekah Christopher had a shot on goal turned away by SMC's Ava Wilson.
From minutes 14 to 32, UPike registered seven shot attempts (five on goal) and four corner kicks but came up empty on the scoresheet. The Bears had three more shot attempts before the end of the first half but could not find the back of the net. UPike outshot Spartanburg Methodist 13-3 in the first 45 but went to the halftime break scoreless.
The Bears turned up the heat in the second half. Over the first 14 minutes of half two, UPike attempted seven shots (four on frame) and a pair of corner kicks. Despite the early pressure, the Bears were still held off the scoresheet.
SMC's lone shot on goal in the second half came off the foot of Caroline Taylor. Taylor's bid on frame was turned away by Brown at the 68:40 mark of the second half.
UPike made another push in the final 11 minutes, with shots on goal from Sara Ritter, Lofqvist, and attempts by Bailey Walker and Christopher but none scored and the match ended in a 0-0 tie. UPike ended the match with 25 shot attempts (13 on goal) while Spartanburg Methodist had four shot attempts (three on goal).
Lofqvist led the Bears with nine shot attempts (five on goal), followed by Sara Ritter with eight shot attempts (five on goal). UPike finished the match with 25 shot attempts, 13 of which were on goal. In net, Brown made her third start of the season and turned away all three of Spartanburg Methodist's shots on goal.
With Saturday's draw, UPike's record is now 6-0-3. The Bears are 4-0-2 in conference play and sit in fourth place in the AAC. Coach Shane Taylor's team will hit the road next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match against No. 16 Truett McConnell.
