RIO GRANDE, Ohio – University of Pikeville volleyball fell 3-1 on the road to the University of Rio Grande Saturday afternoon.  

Set 1: Rio Grande 25, UPike 21 

After an early 5-3 UPike lead, Rio countered with an 8-1 run. The Red Storm held a consistent five point lead until the Bears cut the lead to 16-14 midway through the set. UPike were unable to cut the lead to less than two through the rest of the set and the Red Storm took a 1-0 match lead.  

Set 2: UPike 25, Rio Grande 20 

The Bears came out firing in the second set, scoring eight of the first nine points and nine of the first 12. The Red Storm roared back midway through the set, cutting the lead to 16-15. UPike countered with a 5-1 run. The Bears used that run to with the set and tie the match at 1-1.  

Set 3: Rio Grande 25, UPike 16 

Rio Grande jumped out to an early 12-4 lead to open the third set. UPike could not overcome the early deficit, and the Red Storm took a 2-1 match lead.  

Set 4: Rio Grande 25, UPike 15 

After falling behind 5-1, the Bears knotted the score at 7-7. However, UPike were unable to capitalize on the early momentum. Rio Grande went on a 9-2 run midway through the fourth and never looked back. The Red Storm closed out the set 25-15 and won the match 3-1.  

Cassidy Rivas led the UPike attack with 11 kills, followed by Lanie Hawley with 10. Hawley also led UPike with a pair of serving aces. Chloie Brinton led the Bears with 28 assists and 22 digs. Brinton also had one serving ace.  

UPike is 2-6 following Saturday's loss to Rio Grande. Coach Mary Haynes' squad will be back in action Tuesday evening for their 2025 home opener against Lindsey Wilson. The game between the Bears and the Blue Raiders will start at 7 p.m. at the UPike Gym.
