Worrix reaches milestone in win over Bryan

Senior Keian Worrix scored 17 points, including a bucket early in the second half to give him 1,000 career points, to lead the University of Pikeville to a 91-66 win over Bryan College on Wednesday night.

UPike is now 17-2 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the league. It's the longest win streak since the 2013-14 season when UPike won 17 consecutive games through the first round of the NAIA national tournament.

Bryan is now 6-11 overall, 5-5 in the league.

Consecutive baskets by the Lions put them on top 11-5 with 16:37 left in the opening frame. The Bears then needed five minutes to turn the six-point deficit into a six-point lead.

Five Bears scored in the run as they hit 7 for 8 from the floor. Worrix had five points in the stretch, and when Bunch scored inside with 11:42 left, UPike led 21-15.

Later in the half, the Bears used a 7-2 run to get the lead back to six. Worrix had six, including the three to close it out and put UPike on top 40-34 with 1:18 left. The halftime score was 42-36 at the half.

The late run led to an inspired beginning to the second half for UPike. After the teams traded layups to start the half, the Bears scored 13 of the next 14 points. Five Bears scored in the run, with Blevins having five.

But the highlight came with 17:51 to play when Worrix turned a steal into a layup to make him the 32nd member of the school's 1,000-point club.

When it ended, UPike was on top 57-39 with 14:44 left in the game.

The lead grew to as much as 30, 89-59, with 2:11 left when Rigdon sank two free throws.

Worrix was joined by Blevins with 17. The freshman from Chapmanville, W.Va., also had 11 rebounds. Bunch tossed in 15 and pulled down nine rebounds, while Walker had 14.

Junior Jerry Taylor Jr., led Bryan with 20 points, while senior Kole Torres hit 4 of 5 from the arc to finish with 12.

UPike is back in action next Wednesday, Jan. 31 when it visits Milligan (Tenn.) University. The second game of a doubleheader, the game begins at 7:30 p.m.
