Bears win program record 21st

The University of Pikeville ran its program record win streak to 15 with a 3-0 win over Montreat (N.C.) College on Saturday morning, and in doing so, established another new school benchmark.

The win was the 21st for the Bears, as they became the first team in school history with that total. Three different Bears teams had won 20 in the course of a season. Of those, 14 have come in as many contests against AAC competition this season.

In AAC play, the Bears have won 42 sets and lost only three.

Junior Cassidy Rivas led the Bears with 12 kills on the day, as the team recorded 43 in the win. Senior Allyah Tokelau and sophomore JLynn Risner added nine each.

Junior Olivia Chapman, who had six kills, recorded four service aces in the win.

Senior Lanie Hawley had six blocks to lead the Bears on defense, while Tokelau had five. Brinton paced the Bears with 11 digs. Chapman followed with six.

The Bears will put their 15-match win streak on the line Tuesday when they travel to Milligan (Tenn.) University for another conference contest. First serve will be at 6:30 p.m.

Bears 25, Cavs 10: Montreat pulled within one at 8-7 before the Bears got consecutive kills from Chapman and Rivas, both off sets from Brinton. After an attack error gave the Cavaliers a point to make it 10-8, the Bears scored six straight, getting two kills from Risner and another from Chapman to make it 16-8. One point later the Bears went on another run, this time scoring seven in a row, with four players getting kills including Risner with two. In total it was a 17-3 run to close out the first set.

Bears 25, Cavs 16: The Cavs came out battling to start the second set, and a 3-0 run put them on top 11-9. UPike, however, responded with 10 of the next 11 points to take control. Rivas had three kills in the stretch and Hawley added a service ace. When it ended, UPike led 19-12. The Bears closed it out with the last five points, with Chapman having two service aces, including the point to close it out.

Bears 25, Cavs 14: The teams were tied at 3 when the Bears scored four straight, a brief run bookended by Tokelau kills. The lead was 8-6 when UPike scored six unanswered, with three players recording kills and Lyla Reed adding a service ace to make the score 14-6. Another 6-0 run that largely came with Brinton on serve, pushed the lead to 22-8.
