Bears sweep volleyball honors

ATHENS, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville volleyball team went 3-0 last week, all against league competition. It was wrapped up on Monday when the Bears won all three players of the week honors in the AAC.

Allyah Tokelau, Chloie Brinton and Lanie Hawley, were named attacker, setter and defender of the week, respectively.

The big week resulted in the Bears enjoying a 16-3 record on the season, including a 10-match win streak. The last nine of those wins have come against conference opponent, leaving the Bears as the last unbeaten team in the league with a two-game lead on the field.

Tokelau is a 5-9 senior from Lehi, Utah. In three matches last week, she led the Bears with 41 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .407. She had 18 kills in a five-set win over Reinhardt (Ga.) on Friday morning and followed it up with 16 in a 3-0 win over Brenau (Ga.) on Saturday morning.

For the season she is second on the team with 209 kills, and has an attack percentage of .332. She is fourth in the league in kills, kills per set at 3.22 and hitting percentage.

Brinton is a 5-8 senior from Lindon, Utah, who has been named setter of the week for the fifth time this season and 10th in the last two years. This week, she had 137 assists for an average of 12.45 per set. She also had two kills and two service aces on offense and 42 digs and three blocks on defense.

Her average of 11.42 assists per set leads both the country and conference, and her efforts are a major reason the Bears are No. 1 in the country in kills per set with an average of 14.23.

For Hawley, this is her first win this season as defender of the week and second time in her career. She also has been named attacker of the week this season. Her honor this week was thanks to finishing with 16 blocks, including 10, three solos and seven assists, in Friday night's win over Reinhardt.

The 6-0 senior from Burlington, Wisc., also reached a major milestone on Friday night with her 1,000th career kill. She is third in the league in blocks, averaging 0.94 per set, second in service aces per set at 0.59 and leads the league in attack percentage at .398.

UPike will be back in action on Tuesday night when it hosts Bluefield (Va.) University. The match will be at the UPike Gym and begin at 6:30 p.m.
