Tennessee Wesleyan University sank four free throws in the final 11 seconds of the second overtime to slide past the University of Pikeville 92-88 on Wednesday night at the UPike Gym.
Â
The game was tied 16 times, including at 70 at the end of regulation and 76 after the first overtime.
Â
With 1:46 left in the second overtime period, Bulldog sophomore Jada Edwards broke a tie with a three-point shot to put her team in front 88-85.
Â
That lead lasted 13 seconds before UPike sophomore
Taylor McKenzie knotted it for the final time with a three of her own. McKenzie came off the bench to hit four three-point shots in as many tries and finish with 12 points.
Â
It remained knotted at 88 until Edwards sank two free throws with 11 seconds left. Ten seconds later, she went to the line and put the game away with two more free throws to se the score at its final.
Â
Freshman
Anika Stehbens hit a jump shot with five seconds left in regulation to put the Bears on top 70-68, but junior Talley Lawson scored on a layup with one tick remaining to send the teams to overtime.
Â
An Edwards layup with 38 seconds left in the first extra frame put the Bulldogs on top 76-74, but freshman
Sophie Adkins calmly sank two free throws with 28 seconds left to send the teams to the second extra frame.
Â
Adkins led the Bears with 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Stehbens followed with 19 points and a team high 10 rebounds.
Â
Perhaps the highlight of the night for the Bears came from senior guard
Allie Stone, who hit 5 for 8 from the arc to finish with 15 points.
Â
It was the most points for Stone since she suffered a ruptured ACL on Nov. 22 at Montreat, and tied her for fifth place on the all-time scoring list. She and Bears' hall of famer Allyson Preece now have 1,791 points.
Â
Edwards led five Bulldogs in double figures with 26 points in the win. Lawson just missed a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.
Â
Freshman Leslie Hames followed with 13, freshman Camryn Brown had 12 and sophomore Lalaya Lindsey had 10.
Â
UPike will be home again on Saturday when they host Columbia (S.C.) College. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. opening tip at the Appalachian Wireless Arena.
