The University of Pikeville and Lindsey Wilson University split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Â
UPike took the opener 4-3 with the Blue Raiders claiming the nightcap 10-7. The Bears are now 12-7 on the season and took three of four from Lindsey this season.
Â
The Bears will return to the field on Friday when they travel to Athens, Tenn., to play Tennessee Wesleyan University. The Bulldogs moved up a spot in the most recent NAIA poll and currently sit at No. 4. The first game of the three-game series is set for 3 p.m.
Â
Bears 4, Blue Raiders 3: UPike did all its damage in the first three innings. After falling behind 2-1 in the second, a run in the bottom half tied it and two in the third gave it the lead for good.
Â
The Bears took the lead in the bottom of the first when shortstop
Francis Subero doubled to right center to score right fielder
Riley Paulino, who was hit by a pitch. After Lindsey scored twice in the top of the second, third baseman
Mason Melton singled to center to start the inning and came around to score when second baseman
Easton Mould delivered a sacrifice fly.
Â
In the third, left fielder
Noah Brooks hit a home run to left to put UPike on top. It was his second homer of the season. Mould had his second RBI of the day when he singled in designated hitter
Garren Gledhill, who reached on a single of his own.
Â
Subero had two doubles in the game, while Gledhill had a single and a double. Paulino and catcher
Tyler Brook also had hits.
Â
Reed Sutton (1-0) pitched the first six innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits and struck out three. Cole Camichael pitched the seventh to pick up his second save of the season.
Â
Blue Raiders 10, UPike 7: After falling behind 3-0 in the second, UPike scored all seven of its runs in the third inning. But the lead would be short-lived, as Lindsey scored five times in the fourth and added two insurance runs in the fifth for the win.
Â
Melton had a double among his three hits, scoring once and driving one in. Gledhill had a pair of doubles and drove in two while scoring one. Center fielder Dominic DeCarlo had two singles, two RBIs and a run scored.
Â
Brooks had a hit, a run batted in and a run scored while Subero and Mould had a hit and scored. Paulino also scored for the Bears.
Â
UPike used six pitchers, with only the final reliever, Richter Castillo, going two innings. He had three of UPike's five strikeouts in the game.
