Bears continue torrid streak with sweep of Bluefield

 
The University of Pikeville picked up a sweep of Bluefield (Va.) University on Saturday afternoon, blanking the Rams 8-0 in the opener and winning the finale 9-1.
 
UPike is now 15-7 on the season, 5-5 in the AAC. The Bears have won four straight, all in the league, and 12 of their last 14 games.
 
Bluefield fell to 2-24 overall, 1-11 in the league.
 
The Bears will return to Paul Butcher Field on Monday afternoon when they play Johnson (Tenn.) University. First pitch in the AAC doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
Bears 8, Rams 0, 5 innings: UPike scored multiple runs in the second, third and fifth innings to pick up the win.
 
Centerfielder Addison Johnson led the Bears with three hits, driving in one and scoring one. She was one of three Bears with multiple hits in the game.
 
First baseman Claudia Maness had two hits, including a double, scoring one and driving one in, while catcher Dani Crum had two hits, scored and drove one in.
 
Olivia Metcalfe had a double and drove in two, while second baseman Kaden Dunlap had a hit and scored twice. Abby Hess scored and left fielder Harlee Quick drove one in.
 
Brianna Johnson went the distance for the Bears, allowing only three hits and recording three strikeouts.
 
Bears 9, Rams 1, 6 innings: The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead despite leaving the bases loaded in each of the first three innings. Each team scored a run in the fourth before the Bears earned some separation with four in the fifth and then ended it with a run-scoring single in the sixth.
 
Quick, who drove in the run to end the game, had two hits, one of them a double, drove in three and scored a run. Crum, who scored the winning run, had a double and a triple, scored three times and drove one in.
 
The bottom third of the order provided six of UPike's 13 hits in the win. Shortstop Lois Casey had two hits, drove in three and scored a run. Third baseman Ashlyn Dixon had two hits and scored while Maness had two hits of her own.
 
Chloy Creech had a hit and scored twice, while Horn had a hit and scored.
 
Bryant threw a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out three, moving to 5-2 on the season.
