Bears reach two milestones, record two wins

The University of Pikeville reached a pair of milestones on Monday afternoon as it swept two from NCAA Div. II Bluefield State (W.Va.) University by scores of 5-4 and 10-1.

The Bears now have 25 wins on the season along with 13 losses. It's the most wins since 2019 when they had 26 wins.

Also, sophomore Dani Crum reached 100 hits on her young career.

The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, wrapping up the regular season with two against Truett-McConnell (Ga.) University. First pitch is at 1 p.m. at Paul Butcher Field.

Bears 5, Big Blue 4: UPike led the entire way to win the opener.

Four Bears had multiple-hit games. They were catcher Dani Crum, centerfielder Chloy Creech, first baseman Claudia Maness and pitcher Chloe Calton. Crum and Calton each doubled, drove one in and scored one and Creech had an RBI.

Second baseman Caden Dunlap had a hit and drove one in, third baseman Ashlyn Dixon had a hit and scored and right fielder Maddie Horn had a hit. Courtesy runner Cate Salyers came in to score.

Calton went the distance in the circle, improving to 5-6 on the season. She struck out seven in the win.

Bears 10, Big Blue 1, 5 innings: The Bears scored in each of their four turns at the plate to build a 10-run lead en route to the win.

UPike scored 10 runs on only seven hits, taking advantage of six walks and three Bluefield State errors. The Bears had seven different players record hits.
