Bears drop game at Midway

MIDWAY – The University of Pikeville wrapped up the nonconference portion of the 2026 baseball season on Tuesday, losing to Midway University 8-4.

The Bears are now 25-17 on the season and split the regular-season meetings with Midway after a 14-4 win over the Eagles at home on March 24.

Midway got all its offense in the second and sixth innings, scoring four times in each. The Bears scored a single tally in the third and added three in the fifth to tie the score before the Eagles rallied in the sixth.

The third-inning run came on a solo home run by left fielder Noah Brooks, his team-leading fifth or the season.

In the fifth, designated hitter Samuel Brown led off with a walk and Brooks followed with a single to left, moving into scoring position on an error. Catcher Garren Gledhill delivered both with a double to left-center.

His courtesy runner, Connor Moody, scored when shortstop Francis Subero hit into a fielder's choice to tie the game.

UPike had opportunities to mount a rally but left 10 runners on base on the day.

The Bears had seven hits, with Brooks delivering three of them. Gledhill had two more. The others were singles by third baseman Mason Melton and centerfielder Dominic DeCarlo.

Five hurlers took to the mound for UPike, with the decision going to Dawson Schultz (1-3). Reliever Richtter Castillo threw a scoreless eighth inning, seeing his first action since March 10.

UPike will wrap up the regular season later this week with a three-game series against Bluefield (Va.) University at Johnnie LeMaster Field. The Bears and Rams will play Thursday at 3 p.m. and close it out with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at noon.
