Baseball drops AAC opener

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – No. 5 University of Pikeville opened the 2026 AAC baseball tournament with a 10-0 loss to Montreat (N.C.) University on Tuesday afternoon at Hunter Wright Stadium.

UPike (28-18) had only five hits in the game, a total Montreat had after its first two at bats while it built a 3-0 lead.

The Cavs scored seven runs in the first four innings and did so with only one extra-base hit. It was a two-run homer in the fourth off the bat of catcher Zach Long. The rest of the hits – 11 of them – were singles.

Montreat (32-19) finished the game with 16 hits.

UPike designated hitter had two of his team's hits, both of them singles.

The other three hits – by shortstop Frances Subero, catcher Garren Gledhill and third baseman Mason Melton – were all doubles, but the Bears couldn't get the clutch hit it needed to break through.

The Bears left six men on base.

Kameron Brodeur (5-3) managed only three innings on the hill for the Bears. He allowed nine hits and five runs while striking out two.

He was followed by Isaac Berry, who went three innings, and Brody Mangold, who threw the last two innings.

UPike is scheduled to play at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, weather permitting. It will face the losing team from Tuesday's nightcap between Tennessee Wesleyan and Truett McConnell.
