Grand slam costs Bears at Campbellsville

Homestanding Campbellsville University broke a 2-2 tie with a grand slam in the fourth inning and made it stand up in a 6-2 win over the University of Pikeville on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears posted single runs in the first and third innings, but were unable to break through in their final six turns to the plate.

The top of the first opened with a single to right by second baseman Easton Mould and a walk to centerfielder Riley Paulino. One out later, designated hitter Garren Gledhill singled to right center. Mould scored but Paulino was thrown out, leaving the score 1-0.

Campbellsville (22-14) immediately responded as Jason Franzel hit a two-run homer to left field to put the Tigers in front 2-1.

In the third, UPike tied the game. Left fielder Noah Brooks walked and moved to third on a single by Gledhill. He then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-2.

But in the fourth, the Tigers took the lead for good and again it was on the long ball as Brady Henke hit a grand slam to left to make it 6-2.

UPike (20-13) had chances to draw closer, leaving two runners on base three times the rest of the way but were unable to get them home.

Gledhill had three of UPike's six hits in the game. Third baseman Mason Melton and catcher Tyler Brook joined Mould with hits.

Riley Paulino pitched the first 3-2/3, dropping to 1-1 on the season. Relivers Dawson Schultz, Jake Maniago and Isaac Berry combined for 4-1/3 innings of two-hit pitching in relief, striking out five batters.

The Bears will return home on Friday to begin a three-game series with Bryan (Tenn.) College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
