Bears Drop Three-Set Match to RV Blue Raiders

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The University of Pikeville volleyball team battled Lindsey Wilson University on Tuesday night, but the Blue Raiders came away with a 3-0 victory over the Bears. 

Lindsey Wilson took the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 27-25. 

Senior Lanie Hawley and junior Cassidy Rivas led the Bears offensively with seven kills apiece. Senior Chloie Brinton finished with 23 assists, while senior Lillian Carpenter led UPIKE defensively with 14 digs. 

Blue Raiders 25, Bears 18: The Bears and Blue Raiders traded points throughout the opening set, with neither team able to establish a significant advantage early. The teams were tied at 11-11 before a kill by JLynn Risner helped UPIKE take a 14-11 lead. Lindsey Wilson responded with a 7-1 run to move in front 18-15 and continued to build its advantage. The Blue Raiders extended their lead to 22-18 before a UPIKE timeout and closed out the set 25-18. Hawley and Allyah Tokelau each had two kills in the set, while Brinton recorded five assists and Aspen Braaten had five digs. 

Blue Raiders 25, Bears 15: Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and maintained control throughout. The Bears battled to stay within striking distance, but the Blue Raiders held a 16-9 advantage midway through the set before pulling away for the 25-15 win. Hawley led UPIKE with two kills in the set, while Braaten recorded five digs and Brinton added five assists. 

Blue Raiders 27, Bears 25: UPIKE came out strong in the third set, taking a 10-8 lead before the Blue Raiders battled back to even the score at 16-16. The teams continued to trade points in a tightly contested finish, with the set tied at 23-23. After Lindsey Wilson took a 24-23 lead, a kill by Rivas evened the score at 24-24. The Bears answered again to tie the set at 25-25, but the Blue Raiders scored the final two points to take the set 27-25 and complete the sweep. 

UPIKE will return to action on Friday, August 28 when they head to the Vette City Classic to compete against multiple teams in a two-day tournament. First serve is set for 1:30 PM against the University of Tennessee Southern.
