PIKEVILLE, Ky. - The University of Pikeville volleyball team remained unbeaten in Appalachian Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Bryan College on Saturday morning at the UPIKE Gym.
The Bears took the match by scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-13.
Junior Cassidy Rivas led the Bears with 18 kills, while Senior Lanie Hawley and junior Olivia Chapman each added nine. Senior Allyah Tokelau finished with seven kills, while sophomore JLynn Risner recorded six.
Senior Chloie Brinton had 41 assists for the Bears, while UPIKE finished with six service aces. Chapman led the way with four aces, while Hawley and Reed each added one.
Defensively, the Bears recorded 14 block assists. Chapman led the way with six block assists, while Risner added three. Rivas and Hawley each had two block assists.
Freshman Baylee Moore led UPIKE with 13 digs. Rivas and senior Lillian Carpenter each finished with 15 digs, while Brinton added 10.
With the win, UPIKE improves to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in AAC play.
UPIKE will return to action on Tuesday, September 15, when the Bears travel to Bluefield University (Va.) for another AAC matchup. First serve is set for 6:30 PM.
Bears 25, Lions 23: Bryan opened the match with a 5-3 lead before UPIKE battled back to take a 7-6 advantage. The teams continued to trade points, with the Bears holding a 10-8 lead before Bryan answered with a 6-1 run to move ahead 14-11. UPIKE chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the set at 16-16 following back-to-back kills from Rivas. Bryan regained a 21-17 advantage, but the Bears responded with six straight points to take a 23-21 lead. The Lions tied the score at 23-23, but Rivas and Chapman closed out the set with consecutive points to give UPIKE the 25-23 victory. Rivas recorded six kills in the opening frame.
Bears 25, Lions 20: Bryan took an early 6-4 lead in the second set before UPIKE pulled within one at 8-7. The Lions extended their advantage to 11-7, but the Bears continued to battle and cut the deficit to 12-10. Bryan pushed its lead back to 16-11, but UPIKE then erupted for a 7-0 run to take a 17-16 advantage. Hawley recorded three consecutive kills during the stretch, while Carpenter added two service aces. The Bears continued to control the set, extending their lead to 23-18 before Bryan pulled within four at 24-20. Chapman then recorded the final point as UPIKE took a 2-0 match lead.
Bears 25, Lions 13: UPIKE took control early in the third set, building a 5-3 lead before Bryan pulled within one at 6-5. The Bears then began to pull away, using kills from Tokelau, Hawley and Chapman to build a 12-9 advantage. UPIKE extended its lead to 16-12 before Hawley sparked a 9-1 run with a kill and service ace. Rivas added three kills during the run, while Chapman and Tokelau each recorded a kill as the Bears moved ahead 24-13. Chapman finished the sweep with a final kill, giving UPIKE a 25-13 third-set victory and a 3-0 match win.
