UPLAND, Ind. - The University of Pikeville volleyball team fell 3-1 to No. 14 Taylor University on Saturday to close out day two of the AMF Memorial Tournament.
The Trojans took the match by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22.
Junior Cassidy Rivas led the Bears with 13 kills, while junior Olivia Chapman added 10. Senior Allyah Tokelau and senior Lanie Hawley each finished with seven kills, as did sophomore JLynn Risner.
Senior Chloie Brinton had 44 assists for the Bears, while Chapman recorded three of UPIKE's six service aces.
Defensively, the Bears had six solo blocks and 14 block assists. Chapman led the way with three solo blocks and three block assists, while Hawley had two solo blocks and four block assists.
Freshman Baylee Moore led UPIKE with 17 digs. Brinton had 14 digs, while junior Lyla Reed finished with 10.
UPIKE will be back in action on Wednesday, September 9 where they will host Concord University at the UPIKE Gym. First serve is set for 6:00 PM.
Trojans 25, Bears 21: Taylor jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set, but the Bears battled back and eventually tied the score at 9-9. UPIKE regained a 16-15 advantage following a kill by Hawley, but the Trojans answered with three straight points to take an 18-16 lead. The Bears pulled within one at 18-19 before Taylor scored three straight to build a 22-18 advantage. UPIKE got back within one at 21-22 after kills from Chapman and Tokelau, but the Trojans scored the final three points to take the opener. Rivas and Hawley each had three kills in the set.
Trojans 25, Bears 20: The second set remained tight early, with the teams tied at 4-4 before Taylor moved ahead 6-4. UPIKE responded with a 4-0 run, highlighted by a service ace from Reed and a kill from Rivas, to take an 8-6 lead. The Bears extended the advantage to 13-10 and held a 16-13 lead after a kill by Tokelau. Taylor then scored five straight points to take a 21-18 lead. UPIKE got within two at 20-22 after a Rivas kill, but the Trojans scored the final three points to take a 2-0 match lead.
Bears 25, Trojans 20: UPIKE came out strong in the third set, building an 8-3 lead behind kills, blocks and two service aces from Chapman. The Bears maintained control throughout the set, taking a 16-9 lead following back-to-back attack errors by Taylor. The Trojans cut the deficit to 20-18, but UPIKE answered with a 3-0 run to move ahead 23-19. Taylor got within four at 24-20, but Chapman closed out the set with a kill off a Brinton assist, sending the match to a fourth set.
Trojans 25, Bears 22: Taylor opened the fourth set with a 6-1 run and later extended its lead to 14-8. The Bears fought back, scoring five straight points to pull within 13-15, with Hawley recording a kill and a service ace during the rally. UPIKE eventually tied the set at 16-16 following consecutive Taylor errors, but the Trojans regained the lead and moved ahead 20-18. The Bears stayed within striking distance, cutting the deficit to 22-23 on a kill by Risner, but Taylor scored the final three points to clinch the match 3-1.
