Tigh Compton

Tigh Compton was promoted to head men's basketball coach at the University of Pikeville on February 26, 2020. Since taking the helm, Compton has established the Bears as a consistent contender in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC), compiling a 124-58 overall record and an 86-39 conference mark through six seasons. Under his leadership, UPIKE has captured two AAC regular-season championships, made four consecutive appearances in the NAIA National Tournament and earned numerous individual and team accolades.

Compton has guided the Bears to continued success, highlighted by back-to-back AAC regular-season championships in 2024-25 and 2025-26. In 2024-25, UPIKE finished 25-7 overall and 16-4 in conference play to claim the conference regular-season title and earn its third consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearance. The Bears followed with an even stronger campaign in 2025-26, posting a 27-5 overall record and an 18-1 mark in AAC play. The 27 victories marked Compton's best season as head coach and secured the program's second consecutive AAC regular-season championship and fourth consecutive NAIA Tournament berth.

In 2022-23, Compton led UPIKE to a 20-13 record and the program's first NAIA National Tournament appearance under his leadership. The Bears advanced to the second round after defeating No. 4 Huntington in the opening round. During the 2023-24 season, UPIKE finished second in its inaugural season in the AAC with a school-record 20 conference victories, earning another berth in the NAIA National Tournament.

Compton's success has been recognized throughout the conference and nationally. He has earned two AAC Coach of the Year honors and four HoopDirt NAIA Coach of the Week awards. Under his leadership, UPIKE players have earned 18 All-Conference selections, three NAIA All-American honors, two AAC Player of the Year awards, one AAC Freshman of the Year award and one AAC Defensive Player of the Year award. Bears players have also collected 14 Conference Player of the Week honors, reflecting the individual talent and development within the program.

Beyond the court, Compton has helped foster a culture that values academic achievement alongside athletic success. During his tenure as head coach, UPIKE men's basketball players have earned 69 Academic All-Conference selections and 24 NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, demonstrating the program's commitment to success in the classroom as well as in competition.

Before becoming head coach, Compton spent more than a decade working his way up the UPIKE coaching staff under former head coach Kelly Wells. He joined the program as a student assistant prior to the 2009-10 season, serving in that role from 2009-11 before being promoted to assistant coach ahead of the 2011-12 season and associate head coach prior to the 2014-15 campaign. As the program's top assistant, Compton played an integral role in recruiting, scouting and player development while helping UPIKE compile a 316-102 record over 11 seasons. That stretch included 11 winning campaigns, 10 20-win seasons, eight seasons with at least 25 victories, four conference regular-season championships and 10 NAIA National Tournament appearances.

Compton was on the sidelines for two of the most successful teams in program history. The 2010-11 squad established a then-program record with 30 victories en route to UPIKE's first NAIA National Championship. In 2013-14, the Bears set another program record with 31 wins, swept the Mid-South Conference regular-season and tournament championships, and advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament.

During his time on staff, 18 UPIKE players earned NAIA All-American honors, including 2015 NAIA/NABC National Player of the Year KJ Manigault, Mid-South Conference Players of the Year Jamar “Deuce” Briscoe, Bruce Reed, Darrion Leslie and Jayvian Delacruz, and two-time Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year Bradley Bunch. Compton has also played a vital role in helping more than 30 UPIKE student-athletes continue their basketball careers professionally in the United States and overseas.

Compton graduated from the University of Pikeville in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in communication. He resides in Pikeville with his wife and fellow UPIKE alumna, Lisa Compton, and their two children, daughter Lainey Mae and son Tate.
