Alexis Reed, who played in Williams’ system for four seasons, is the assistant coach for the women’s basketball team.
“We’re very excited to welcome Alexis back to the family,” said Williams, who is set to begin his eighth season as head coach of the Bears. “She will bring the same fire and intensity that she had as a player, and we’re excited to have her presence back in the locker room.”
After graduating from UPike with a degree in biology, Reed spent last season as an assistant coach at Wheeling University, an NCAA Div. II school in Wheeling, W.Va. She helped the Cardinals to a 14-12 season in the WVIAC, one season after they went 7-15 in the conference.
Reed played at UPike from 2018-22, appearing in 87 games despite missing almost the entirety of her sophomore season due to an injury. She scored 779 points, grabbed 124 rebounds and handed out 101 assists in her time as a Bear and was an all-conference selection.
The Maysville native helped the Bears to two appearances in the NAIA national tournament. Included in that was her final game as a Bear which came in the second round of the tournament in Dayton, Tenn.
As a senior, Reed averaged 8.8 points per game and shot 36.6 percent from the three-point arc. She was money from the free throw line, hitting 51-of-55 in her final season for 92.7 percent.
In her career, she shot 34.9 percent from the arc and 84.1 percent from the stripe. In addition to her success on the court, she was an academic all-conference selection for her achievements in the classroom.
Reed came to Pikeville after helping lead Mason County to the 2015 10th Region title and an appearance in the state semifinals that season. She also helped the Royals to five consecutive 39th District tournament championships as a player.
“I’m blessed and extremely excited with the opportunity to be back at my alma mater,” said Reed. “I’m thrilled to be able to help these young women grow as individuals on and off the court. I can’t wait to see what this season has in store and to learn as much as I can from Coach Williams.”
