Wise scores 53 straight, rolls past UPIKE

Box Score WISE, Va. – U.Va.-Wise reeled off 53 unanswered points and rolled to a 56-14 win over the University of Pikeville Saturday afternoon at Carl Smith Stadium.
 
The Cavaliers (5-3, 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference) spotted the Bears an early touchdown and then exploded, thanks as much to their defense and the offense. The defensive unit scored three touchdowns during the stretch as the Bears turned it over eight s by Lonell Park turnovers in the loss.
 
Pikeville got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Trevor Hoskins hit senior Bobby Owens on a 12-yard pass to end a 10-play, 92-yard drive with 5:19 to play in the opening period. Freshman Grayson Quick hit the extra-point to make it 7-0.
 
But from there it was all Cavaliers. The defense got scores on a 20-yard fumble recovery by Christian Dejarnette and third-quarter interception returns of 60 yards by Vernon Payne and 48 yards by Lonell Parker.
 
The Cavs scored on three rushing touchdowns, as Stewart Robertson scored on runs of 23 and four yards while Ryan Bouldin found pay dirt from two yards away. The only passing score was a 30-yard  pass from Tye Marshall to Michel Steele.
 
Tyler Graham booted field goals of 37, 35 and 39 yards.
 
Pikeville (4-4, 1-3) scored its final touchdown when Jared Harris hit K'Wayne Hunter, who ran 70 yards for the score.
 
Hoskins struggled on Saturday, going 16-of-37 for 164 yards and four interceptions to go with the touchdown. Harris completed both of his passes for 79 yards.
 
Hunter led the Bears' receiving corps with three receptions for 111 yards. The leading rusher was Akeem Bennett, who had 30 yards on five carries.
 
Wise ran 49 times for 312 yards, with Andre Dickerson chewing up 131 yards on 10 carries and Robertson finishing with 124 yards on 18 hauls.
 
Marshall and Hunter Hoke combined to complete 9-of-22 passes for 147 yards, finding Steele five times for 81.
 
Sophomore Josh Sammons led Pikeville defenders with 10 tackles, four of them being solos. He also had an interception and broke up two passes.
 
Amondre Johnson led Wise with 17 tackles, seven of them being solos. He had two interceptions, two breakups and a forced fumble.
 
Pikeville will be off next week, returning to play on Saturday, Nov. 4 when it visits WVU Tech at 2:30 p.m. Wise will host Georgetown at 1:30 p.m.
