Setty’s second-half explosion leads Bears to 5-0

Box Score PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Junior guard Trevor Setty scored 28 of his 30 points in the second half Saturday night to lead the No. 1 University of Pikeville to a 93-69 win over Bluefield College in the finale of the Appalachian Wireless Classic.
 
Setty, a 6-8 junior from Maysville, hit 10-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 from the arc after intermission to help break open a 34-30 game.
 
He had plenty of help leading the Bears to a 5-0 start. Senior forward Shane Burrell had 18 points and eight rebounds while classmate Andrew Young tossed in 18 with five boards.
 
Junior forward Chris Watson came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds. The Daytona Beach, Fla., native added five steals and three assists.
 
The inside trio led the Bears to a 37-28 advantage on the glass. They also recorded 21 steals on 25 Bluefield turnovers on the night.
 
After struggling against the aggressive Rams in the first half, UPike nailed 72.7 percent of its second-half shots, including 5-of-11 from the arc. They also hit all but one of their seven free throw tries after going 8-opf-13 in the first half.
 
A three-point basket by junior guard Kearsten Marion with 19:20 left cut the Pikeville lead to 35-34. But a 34-16 stretch that lasted a little more than 10 minutes and ended with a slam by Chris Watson pushed the lead to 69-50 with 8:55 left.
 
In the interim, Setty had 16 of his 30 points to help stretch the lead that eventually got to 27 late in the game.
 
Bluefield (2-4) was led by sophomore Byron Carpenter with 23 points and led his club with seven rebounds, six of them off the offensive glass. Marion and freshman Andrew Wilson tossed in 13.
 
 
Miami-Middletown 82, U.Va.-Wise 77: Five Thunder Hawks scored in double figures and they shot hit 62.5 percent from the field in the second half to knock off U.Va.-Wise.
 
Middletown (3-1), which has played all of its games against Mid-South Conference competition, got 15 points and seven rebounds from sophomore Shawn Robinson. Sophomore Jalen Watts and freshman Akeem freeman had a dozen each, with freshman Max Zukowitz coming off the bench for 11 and freshman Dexter Robinson adding 10.
 
Sophomore Lamar Mallory scored six points and pulled down nine rebounds before fouling out.
 
Wise (1-2) got 22 markers each from seniors Travis Berry and Josh Jordan. Jordan added 11 rebounds, while senior Norris Gaskins also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.
 
The teams were even in most categories. They each had 40 rebounds and Middletown ad 15 turnovers compared to nine by Wise. But Middletown shot 50.8 percent from the floor while the Cavaliers sank only 40.6 percent.
