Tech ends losing streak by doubling up UPIKE

Box Score MONTGOMERY, W.Va. – The Golden Bears of WVU Tech sent their seniors out in style on Saturday, taking advantage of seven University of Pikeville turnovers to end a 13-game losing skid with a 42-21 win.

The loss for Pikeville was its fourth straight and was its first in six meetings with Tech. The Bears, who have now turned the ball over 15 times in its last two games, are now 4-5 on the season and need a win next Saturday when they host Kentucky Christian University in the season finale to salvage a .500 season after winning four of their first five games.

The loss also spoiled a phenomenal day by sophomore Hunter Adams. The Middlesboro native, getting his first career start at tailback after moving from receiver, ran for 233 yards and all three Pikeville scores. It was the fourth time in school history a Bear had ran for more than 200 yards and the first time since 2005.

Adams had scoring runs of 14 and 50 yards in the first quarter to put his team on top 14-6.

But Tech posted three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 26-14 lead to the break. The scores came on a one-yard run by quarterback Julian Bernard and passes from Mitch Brumfield – with whom he split time all day – of nine yards to Cody Sneed and 59 yards to Darry Reynolds.

Brumfield stretched the lead to 34-14 when he hit Robby Anzuini for a 28-yard score with 8:56 to play in the third and then Reynolds for the conversion.

Adams drew the Bears to within 13 when he scored from eight yards out with 6:15 left in the third. But the only fourth-quarter score was a 47-yard scamper by Najee Curry to set the final score. With the run, Curry finished with 125 yards on 14 carries.

Junior quarterback Trevor Hoskins struggled to a 15-of-28 passing day, finishing with 199 yards and three interceptions. He hit senior Axxel Rivas five times for 51 yards to lead the receiving corps.

Tech's combination was 17-of-25 for 212 yards and four touchdowns.

Auzuini caught five passes for 56 yards while Ryan Bowdem, who hauled in a 13-yard scoring pass to get Tech on the first-quarter scoreboard, also caught five for 34 yards.

On the defensive side, sophomore Taylor Woods led Pikeville with eight tackles, six of them unassisted. Sophomore Josh Sammons had seven solo tackles.

Tech was paced by Henry Barber, who had 13 tackles, all but one a solo.
