Darkness ends nightcap in tie

PIKEVILLE, Ky.  – The elusive first win of the season slipped away from Pikeville College in the second game of a doubleheader with Asbury University Tuesday afternoon, as the teams finished with a rare tie at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

Pikeville fell to 0-5-1 after losing the opener 5-2 and seeing the nightcap end in a 2-2 tie, called after eight innings due to darkness.

The Bears will head to Rome, Ga., for a three-game series beginning Friday against Shorter College.

Game 1: A late rally fell short for the Bears, who dropped the opener 5-2.

Trailing 5-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Bears got a two-run double from sophomore Matt Eversole to score both junior Chris Vicini and senior Ryan Jones. Vicini was running for senior catcher Obed Quiles, who led off with a walk, which was followed by the Jones walk.

However, the Bears had four players thrown out on the base paths in the loss to squelch their scoring opportunities.

Pikeville scattered four hits. In addition to Eversole's double, the Bears got singles from Quiles, sophomore Adam Overbay and freshman Cody Vest.

The Bears lost despite recording 10 strikeouts. But five walks and two hit batters – four of which scored – led to their demise.

Game 2: Darkness fell on LeMaster Field after eight innings, with the Bears leaving the bases loaded as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

It was the second time in three days the Bears had a game go extra innings, and not be able to complete a twin bill. On Sunday, after the opener with 10 innings, the second game was stopped after five.

Pikeville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Quiles tripled to score Overbay, who led off with a single. Vicini, running for Quiles, scored when Jones reached on an infield error.

The Eagles got single runs in the second and fifth to tie the game.

Pikeville got tremendous work out of the bullpen by freshman Austin Lyons. The Paintsville product went the final 6.2 innings, striking out eight and walking one while allowing only a single unearned run.

Quiles, who reached base all four times, had two hits, while Overbay had a pair of safeties as well. Sophomore Zac Coe and freshmen Jake Partin and Colin Fultz had one hit each.
