PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Pikeville College got its first two wins this baseball season on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off KIAC member Cincinnati Christian University.
Pikeville improved to 2-8-1 with wins by finals of 11-1 and 7-6 over the Eagles.
The doubleheader was played at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex due to the weather, and was completed despite the on-again, off-again rain of the cold day.
The Bears will be back home on Friday, hosting Bryan College in a single game at 1 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
PC 11, CCU 1: After giving up a single run in the first, Pikeville posted three multiple-run innings to pick up its first win of the season.
The win came behind a strong performance from junior left-hander David Bishop, who went the distance, fanning nine and walking only one in allowing three hits and the single earned run.
The Bears scored four times in the second. Two of the runs came on double-steals of home, with senior catcher Obed Quiles driving in one with a single.
The two-run third saw a run score on a passed ball and another on a ground out for a 6-1 lead. The Bears added a run in the fifth, when sophomore Andrew Hitchcock walked and scored on an error.
The Bears put the game away in the sixth with four more runs. Freshman Cody Miller doubled to left to drive in two. The final two, Miller and sophomore Andrew Hitchcock, who was hit by a pitch, scored on passed balls to end the game.
Pikeville's 11 runs were scored on only five hits.
PC 7, CCU 6: The Bears played a lineup made up of nearly all freshmen and rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win.
The four-run sixth was keyed by a two-run single by third baseman Ethan Boggs. Right-fielder Jake Partin plated sophomore Zac Coe with a sacrifice fly, and Boggs scored when first-baseman Christian Chasteen singled.
Trailing 6-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Bears got things going when Tyler Fendley and Justin Miley drew one-out walks. One out later, Coe ended it with a game-winning double.
Boggs had two hits and three runs batted in, while Fendley had two hits, scoring two of the three times he reached base.
Freshman Chase Ellis went the last three innings to earn a win in his first decision of the season. He struck out four and allowed only two hits.
