WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Baseball season came to an end this weekend for the Pikeville College Bears, who dropped two games in the first round of the Mid-South Conference tournament.
The Bears fell to Cumberlands in the opening round best-of-three series by finals of 3-0 and 16-9 and as a result, the 2011 season came to an end.
“We're a young team but I saw a lot of improvements,” said Coach Rob Taylor, who completed his second season at the helm of the Bears. “I think we're making the right strides and I'm proud of what's happening with the Pikeville College baseball team.”
Friday: Junior Kyle Robertson gave the Bears a tremendous effort on the mound but the offense could not get going in suffering a 3-0 loss in the series opener.
Robertson, a native of Hopkinsville, went all eight innings, allowing eight hits and walking only two while striking out one. He kept the ball on the ground, getting 12 of his 24 outs in the infield.
But the Bears struggled against Shane Stancil, who allowed only four hits and a walk while striking out seven and also going the distance.
Sophomore leadoff hitter Adam Overbay had two safeties for the Bears, who also got hits from senior Ryan Jones and sophomore Matt Eversole.
Saturday: The teams combined for 34 hits but the Bears committed six errors in a 16-9 loss.
One day after picking up only four hits, the Bears were credited with 16 off three Patriot pitchers. But an eight-run seventh inning pushed Cumberlands ahead 12-4 and the Bears were unable to complete the rally.
Despite the errors five Bear pitchers were charged with 14 earned runs in the season finale as the Pats compiled 18 hits.
Eversole, junior Jason Rosen and freshman Christian Chasteen had three hits apiece for the Bears. Eversole scored two and drove in one, Rosen scored once and he and Chasteen were both credited with two RBIs.
Senior Obed Quiles had two hits and drove in two, while Overbay, senior Ryan Jones and freshmen Brad Andrews, Justin Miley and Cody Miller had one hit each. Andrews drove in two runs while Miley scored two and Miller one.
All 16 of Pikeville's hits were singles.
