11-point run leads Tech past UPIKE

Box Score MONTGOMERY, W.Va. – West Virginia Tech broke open a two-point halftime lead early in the second half and knocked off the University of Pikeville 78-68 Saturday afternoon at the Baisi Center.
 
Leading 36-34 at the break, the teams traded baskets before Tech went on an 11-0 run. Using 3:11 off the clock, seniors Donald Robinson and Rahshon Tabb had four points apiece in the stretch, and when Robinson sank two free throws with 15:52 to play the Golden Bears were on top 49-36.
 
Tech (12-5) maintained a double-figure lead into the final minute and a half. The Bears got within seven at 75-68, on a three by senior Chris McHenry, but only nine seconds remained in the game.
 
In the first half of the game, Tech shot only five free throws while the Bears got 15 tries, but in the second half, UPIKE was 4-of-5 while Tech was 14-of-22.
 
Tech won the rebounding battle 43-37 with 15 of them coming off the offensive glass.
 
Junior David Rawlinson led all scorers with 22 points and paced his club with four assists. The Las Vegas native sank 8-of-9 free throws in the win.
 
Tabb and Robinson scored 15 apiece to join him in double figures. Robinson had nine rebounds to lead the Golden Bears.
 
Senior Andrew Young led the Bears with 17 points and also had seven rebounds. McHenry scored 16 for the Bears, while junior Trevor Setty scored 11 and added nine rebounds before fouling out of the game.
 
Pikeville (11-7) will be off for a week before visiting U.Va.-Wise in a 4 p.m. tip next Saturday. WVU Tech will hit the road on Thursday night, visiting Shawnee State at 8 p.m.
