Bears ranked 22nd this week

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Last Thursday's loss to Georgetown College cost the University of Pikeville two spots in the latest national rankings.

The Bears slipped to No. 22 after a win and a loss in the last week of action. That is the results of the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, released Monday afternoon by the national office in Kansas City.

The Bears currently stand 15-8 on the season after a loss at Georgetown was followed up by Saturday's 88-75 win at Shawnee State.

Only five teams held their position compared to last week's poll, and one of them – No. 25 Xavier, La. – is now tied for its place. The shakeup started at the top where the nation's final unbeaten team Shorter, Ga., lost to Point, Ga., 73-72 in overtime last Saturday.

As a result, the Hawks flipped places with last week's No. 2 team. Robert Morris, Ill., the top-ranked team heading into last year's national tournament, took seven of the 12 first-place votes and is the new No. 1. The teams following them also flopped places, as Oklahoma Baptist moved to No. 3 and Southern Poly, Ga., is fourth.

Our Lady of the Lake, Texas, and Rogers State, Okla., remained fifth and sixth, respectively, with Martin Methodist, Tenn., moving up two places to No. 7.

Last week's win over UPIKE, followed by the win on Saturday over U.Va.-Wise, helped Georgetown move up four places to No. 8. Westmont, Calif., charged up 13 places to No. 9 this week, with Mountain State, W.Va., rounding out the Top 10.

The only other Mid-South Conference team in the poll is Lindsey Wilson, which fell to No. 12 after losing to Cumberlands on Saturday. The Patriots are now one of three MSC teams in the receiving votes column, getting seven ratings points.

Campbellsville and St. Catharine, with one vote each, give the league six teams mentioned on the 12 national ballots.

Pikeville will be in action, ironically enough, against both of those teams this week. The Bears visit Campbellsville Thursday night at 8 p.m., before traveling to St. Catharine on Saturday for a 4 p.m. opening tip.
