Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A three-point basket by junior
Trevor Setty bounced off the rim to give Campbellsville University a 58-57 win in a thriller over No. 22 Pikeville Thursday night.
Senior
Chris McHenry grabbed the offensive rebound, but couldn't get the shot off before the horn sounded to give the Tigers the crucial Mid-South Conference win.
Only seconds earlier, McHenry had given his team a 57-55 lead by nailing a three from straightaway with 29.9 seconds to play. The basket followed a steal and layup by sophomore
Josh Whitaker with 1:33 to play to pull the Bears within one point.
The lead after McHenry's bucket was Pikeville's second lead of the half.
But the Tigers wasted no time in responding. Senior guard Cedric Henderson drove down the lane and fed 6-8 sophomore Jordan Myers in the corner for the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning, three-point bucket with 20.4 seconds to play.
Pikeville (15-9, 7-6 in the MSC) got a timeout a second later to set up the final play. Setty's knees buckled before he regained his composure to get the shot off.
Campbellsville (17-8, 6-6) took a 35-26 lead after a three-point shot by junior Justin Ennis with 17:43 to play. It proved to be the largest lead of the game for either team.
Pikeville responded with a 14-5 run that saw the Bears score the final seven, ending with a dunk and free throw by senior Shane Burrell with 12:50 left to tie the game at 40.
A three-point play off a steal and layup by Henderson gave the Tigers a 50-45 lead with 5:11 left. But 42 seconds later, McHenry had hit a three from the corner and a pair of free throws to tie the game and set the stage for the finish.
Campbellsville hit only 23.1 percent from the three-point stripe, but got the one that mattered at the end.
McHenry was the only Bear in double figures, hitting four three-point shots to finish with 22. Setty and senior
Cordaro Ellis each finished with eight points.
Campbellsville had four players in double figures, with none having more than 12. Those came from Henderson. Ennis, senior Jonas Bohm and junior Malik Thomas each tossed in 10.
Thomas and Bohm led the Tigers with eight rebounds each to lead them to a 42-35 edge on the glass.
Setty's eight rebounds paced the Bears.
Pikeville remains on the road for Saturday's game. The final regular-season road game will be at St. Catharine and will tip off at 4 p.m. Campbellsville will entertain U.Va.-Wise on Saturday.
