Lindsey blanks Bears in MSC tourney

DANVILLE, Ky. – Lindsey Wilson College broke open a scoreless game with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth and knocked off the University of Pikeville 8-0.
 
The loss sends the Bears into the Losers Bracket of the 2012 Mid-South Conference tournament, where they will play Campbellsville, who lost to Rio Grande 2-0 in Thursday morning's other opener, at 3 p.m. at Millennium Park.
 
Lindsey Wilson (43-10), the top seed in the tournament, will meet Rio Grande game at 5 p.m.
 
Pikeville (17-33) had opportunities to score, leaving runners on base in all six turns at the plate, but never pushed one across.
 
In the fourth inning junior Jane Egiazarova put her team on top with a deep blast to left field to make it 3-0. Senior Emily Priar and freshman Andrea Whelan, who both had singled, scored in front of her.
 
The Blue Raiders then took advantage of two UPIKE errors to put three more runs on the board in the fifth. An error put junior Alexis Rodgers on base, with freshman Travatiia Bowden following with a single. Another rinfield error off the bat of Priar scored both to make it 5-0, with Priar scoring on a single by Whelan.
 
In the sixth, Lindsey put the game away without an out. Senior Amy Buwalda led off with a homer to left-center. No. 9 hitter Jordan Gilland followed with an infield single and scored on Bowden's single.
 
Whelan led Lindsey's 12-hit attack with three safeties, including a double. Bowden and Priar added two singles each. Egiazarova and Buwalda had homers, while Rogers, Gilland and junior Josie Cox all singled.
 
Pikeville had three singles off two Blue Raider pitchers. They were singles by junior Kayla Morgan and freshmen Brandi Jo Howard and Shamy Williams.
 
Junior Lauren Seibert got the win, throwing the last three innings in relief for Lindsey Wilson. She fanned seven while walking one and allowed only one hit. Starter Cara Law threw the first three, allowing two hits and striking out four while walking two.
 
Junior Courtney Patrick was the pitcher of record for the Bears, allowing eight hits and six runs, three of which were earned, in five innings.
