LEBANON, Tenn. – Sydney Hall was the only player to reach double figures in kills for the University of Pikeville volleyball team as Cumberland (Tenn.) posted a 3-0 win on Friday at Dallas Floyd Gym.
While Hall was impressive with 11 kills on 25 swings, UPIKE hit just .074 as a team, compared to the Bulldogs at .270. Abby Shaw led Cumberland with a match-high 14 kills and Mackenzie Gass pitched in with 13, tallying .407 and .550 hitting percantages, respectively.
The Bears (13-18, 2-12 MSC) had their best chance at taking a set in the opener, losing past regulation 26-24. UPIKE enjoyed 11-5 and 19-14 leads in the set, but was outscored 12-5 down the stretch. The Bears briefly led by two at the start of the second set before losing 25-18, but never gained the lead again.
Cumberland (13-16, 4-9 MSC) used a .355-.062 hitting advantage in the final frame to win 25-14.
Setter
Sydney Morris finished with 17 assists and
Taylor Bragg led the defense with eight digs for UPIKE.
Chelsea Staples had a big night at the net with two solo blocks and two assists. Bragg, Morris and
Haley Esquivel all finished with one ace.
Meghan Gass led the match with 19 assists for the Bulldogs, while Karlie Collins and Laura Peavy picked up nine digs each.
