PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville volleyball team captured a 3-2 Mid-South Conference win at Bluefield (Va.) back on Oct. 7, on Tuesday the Bears hope to do it again, taking on the Rams at 7:30 p.m. ET at the UPIKE Gym on Dig Pink night.
Live stats are available at the NAIA DakStats site. This is the first of three home matches to end the regular season. UPIKE will likely need wins in all three to qualify for the MSC Tournament.
Pikeville (13-19, 2-13 MSC) has lost eight straight matches since a 3-0 win over Alice Lloyd (Ky.), while the Rams enter the match with a 5-20 overall record and 0-15 mark in league play.
The Bears won the first matchup with Bluefield by scores of 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 15-12.
Chelsea Staples led the offense with 13 kills and
Sydney Hall added 11.
Dominique Melvin paced the defense with a season-high 35 digs.
Facing Bluefield brings on the task of defending against leading hitter Jasmine Morrow. Ranking 11th in the NAIA with 4.0 kills per set, Morrow does the bulk of the attacking for the Rams with 341 kills on the season. Morrow has high matches of 30 kills against Tennessee Temple and 25 twice, against UPIKE and Slippery Rock.
Dig Pink is the trademarked name for the Side-Out Foundation's fundraising events. At Tuesday's match there will be donation boxes as well as raffle prizes and a serving game for just $1. All proceeds go to help fund breast cancer research and support to patients and their families.
