PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Trey Rakes came off the bench for a double-double of 20 points and 10 assists and head coach
Kelly Wells won his 150th game as the No. 7 University of Pikeville men's basketball team overwhelmed Ohio State-Mansfield 112-35 on Friday at the East Ky. Expo Center.
Rakes, a freshman from Taylorsville, Ky., played a team-high 28 minutes and made the most of it, finishing 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Rakes also grabbed four rebounds and swiped three steals with the starters sitting out the second half.
This was a game to get players on the bench some valuable minutes as the Mavericks didn't match up well with the Bears in their season opener. It took less than three minutes for UPIKE (2-0) to build a double-digit lead at 13-2 on a basket from
Bruce Reed.
A put back from
Michael Eneh made it a 21-point lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half and the rout was on. The Bears would go on to lead by as many as 79 points after a three from
Hobo McCoy with just under two minutes left in the game.
McCoy's three - his third on the night - gave Rakes his 10th assists, providing a moment of note in an otherwise unnoteworthy game.
Michael Eneh joined Rakes with a more traditional double-double, adding 17 points and 15 rebounds, while
Dalton Cornett was a point shy of the feat with nine points and 11 boards.
All double-digit scorers for UPIKE came off the bench as
John Nunnally had 15 with four threes,
Hobo McCoy scored 13 and
Colt Chapman added 11.
The Bears blistered the nets, shooting 61.4 percent from the field and 44.0 percent on threes. The Mavericks struggled in all three facets, shooting 22.6 percent from the field, 17.4 percent from three and 30.0 percent from the free-throw line.
Jalen Jones and Jabree Lindsay led OSU-Mansfield (0-1) with nine points each, while Jarrod Hawkins brought down a team-best eight rebounds.
UPIKE won the battle of the boards 61-23, including a 16-7 advantage on the offensive glass. The difference in points off the bench was glaring at 85-4.
The Bears have a short turnaround as UVa.-Wise comes to the Expo at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Cavaliers are in their first season outside the Mid-South Conference as they transition into NCAA Div. II.
