SEWANEE, Tenn. – What a difference a day makes.
After dropping three straight matches at the Sewanee Invitation on Friday, the University of Pikeville volleyball team bounced back with a 3-0 win against Brescia (Ky.) and 3-1 decision against Pensacola Christian (Fla.) on Saturday in the final matches of the event.
Full stats from the two matches won't be available until Sunday. At that time more details will be added to the recap.
UPIKE (3-3) beat Brescia by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-15, giving it two shutout wins on the season. The Bears took an extra set to top Pensacola Christian, winning 15-25, 25-5, 25-17, 25-11.
Haley Esquivel was a force against Brescia, posting a team-high 10 kills, while Sydney Hall wasn't far behind with eight. Rachel Murphy got in on the offense as well with five kills and Sydney Morris finished with 17 assists.
Defensively, Chelsea Staples was a beast at the net, sending back four blocks while also picking up a pair of digs. Morris was the digs leader for UPIKE with 21, while Dominique Melvin added 15 and a team-best three aces.
UPIKE is back on the court at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at No. 7 Georgetown (Ky.).
