GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Haley Esquivel had a solid night with eight kills, a block and an assist, but it wasn't enough to get the University of Pikeville past No. 17 Georgetown, falling to the Tigers 3-0 on Friday.
Esquivel was backed up by Sydney Hall with six kills and Cassidy Tackett with five, but Georgetown had too much firepower, tallying set wins of 25-17, 25-5 and 25-22.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the first set before Georgetown took control late in the frame, then went on to dominate the second set, allowing the Bears just five points. The third set got interesting as UPIKE wouldn't go away, eventually taking a 22-20 lead behind a strong spree of serves from Chelsea Staples.
But the UPIKE offense stalled and the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to close out the match with a 25-22 win.
Sydney Morris finished with 19 assists in the three-set match, while Caitlynn Pfaadt picked up nine digs. Morris did her part orchestrating the offense as well with six assist, while Connor Cook and Pfaadt tallied one ace each.
With the loss, the Bears drop to an even 13-13 overall and 1-10 in the Mid-South Conference, while Georgetown improves to 20-7 overall and 9-1 in league play.
Complete statistics were not immediately available following the match, but a box score will be added to this recap and at UPIKEBears.com soon.
