Torstenson, Men’s Soccer Play to Tie with Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- One-hundred and 10 minutes of soccer were played between the University of Pikeville and Shawnee State on Wednesday, but neither team could come up with a goal, ending in a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods.

Instead of offensive heroes, it was a night for UPIKE's Tait Torstenson to shine. The goalkeeper collected a season-high 10 saves, including five in the 20 minutes of extra time. The Bears were outshot 31-18, including a 10-5 lead in shots on goal, keeping Torstenson busy throughout the game.

Shawnee State's Brandon Pfeifer also put together a clean sheet with five saves as SSU's record went to 3-10-3 overall and 1-3-2 in Mid-South Conference Play. UPIKE, tallying its first tie since finishing at 2-2 against Shawnee State last season at home, moves to 2-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the MSC.

Eddie Zavala did his best to put the Bears of UPIKE on top, finishing with a team-high five shots, but none were put on target. UPIKE's five shots on goal were spread out by five different players. SSU got nine attempts from Joseph Webster with six on frame to no avail.

Reserve Dylan Stevens also made things interesting with eight shots for the Bears of Shawnee State off the bench and SSU held a 14-3 advantage in corner kicks, but still found itself scoreless at the end of the second overtime.

Fouls went in favor of SSU as well, 26-16, while a pair of yellow cards were also issued to it, compared to just one for UPIKE.

Pikeville's next game is a make-up with Campbellsville on Saturday night at 6 p.m. ET at the Bob Amos Complex.
