PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Josh Armstrong scored a goal for Cumberland (Tenn.) in the third minute and that was it for the game. The University of Pikeville couldn't find an equalizer and the Bulldogs failed to add to their lead as they held on for a 1-0 win on Saturday at the Bob Amos Complex.
Cumberland (6-4-1, 4-1 MSC) outshot UPIKE 8-4 and had three shots on goal while UPIKE failed to get any of its attempts on target.
Mateus Meira paced the Bears with two shots, but they failed to get off an attempt in the final 34 minutes as Exon Menjivar's shot that sailed wide in the 56th minute was the final chance to tie the score and the only shot attempt for UPIKE in the second half.
The Bulldogs also held UPIKE (1-4, 0-3 MSC) without a corner kick while taking three of their own and had more fouls at 13-11. Brian McNamara and Kurt Pierce led CU with two shots each while one of McNamara's was on goal.
Ian Hamilton posted the clean sheet in goal without having to make a save. Diego Rivas didn't have a lot of action in goal for the Bears, but did finish with two saves and the one goal allowed.
The Bears did get off back-to-back shots in the 37th and 38th minutes of the first half, but neither attempt threatened Hamilton.
UPIKE is back in action on the road at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday at Ohio Christian in Circleville, Ohio.
