Reed’s 37 Points Push No. 2 Men’s Basketball over No. 19 Georgetown

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Bruce Reed set up camp at the free-throw line, hitting 19-of-26 attempts, to finish with a career-high 37 points and help No. 2 Pikeville beat No. 19 Georgetown (Ky.) 105-95 on Saturday at the East Ky. Expo Center.

The matchup was deemed the NAIA Men's Basketball National Game of the Week and although UPIKE held a double-digit lead the majority of the game, the last three minutes lived up to the hype.

Leading 84-68 after a Chris Cantino free throw, the Bears were outscored 22-6 over the next five minutes to see the game tied at 90 with 2:20 on the clock. UPIKE led 95-92 after a layup from Keala King, then went on to outscore the Tigers 10-3 in the final minute to avenge an earlier loss in Georgetown.

The Bears (22-2, 12-1 MSC) led by as many as 19 points twice in the second half, including with less than 10 minutes to play. Georgetown's Monty Wilson was determined to make things interesting though, going from a scoreless first half to pouring in a team-high 28 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field.

Reed added eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals to his line, while Chris Cantino posted a double-double of 18 points and 13 boards and King added 13 points and six rebounds. Kenny Manigault was disruptive on defense all night, taking away five steals to go with his 13 points.

While Wilson was incredible in the second half, Dominique Hagans led Georgetown (18-7, 9-5 MSC) with 29 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams shot well with Pikeville holding a slight advantage at 53.8 to 49.3 percent. The Bears did nearly double Georgetown in free-throw attempts, hitting 34-of-49 from the stripe. The battle of the boards went to the Bears 39-31, including a 16-8 advantage on the offensive glass.

Not enough can be said about the Bears' defensive effort, forcing 22 Georgetown turnovers with just 11 assists. That led to a very important 23-10 advantage in points off giveaways.

Georgetown led the game just two times, with the latest coming at 10-9 in the first half on an inside bucket from Deondre McWhorter. After tying the score at 10, UPIKE went on a 26-7 run to take control of the game and go into halftime up 45-29.

UPIKE returns to the court at 5 p.m. ET on Monday in a rescheduled conference game with Cumberlands (Ky.) at the East Ky. Expo Center.
