Baseball Splits with Asbury on Thursday, Gilligan Throws a Shutout

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Corey Gilligan put in a complete-game effort to shutout Asbury (Ky.) 4-0 in game one and help the University of Pikeville finish with a split after the offense struggled in the nightcap on Thursday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

Gilligan was backed up by an offense that scored four runs on seven hits to win a sixth straight game, but the Bears could score just two on six hits in a 6-2 loss in which they also committed a pair of errors.

It's a short break now for the Bears are they host Goshen (Ind.) for a Noon ET doubleheader on Saturday.

After two innings of scoreless baseball, UPIKE (6-3) pounced in the third inning of game one, scoring two runs that ended up being enough for the win with Gilligan dealing. Center fielder Brad Andrews got it started with an RBI triple, followed by left fielder Zach Nothwehr roping a single to right field to bring him home.

UPIKE added an insurance run in both the fourth and fifth innings as it took advantage of an Eagle (1-2) error in each frame. Gilligan wrapped up his seven innings of work with two strikeouts and four hits allowed with just one walk to improve to 2-1 on the season.

First baseman Nicolas Gonzales led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Andrews and third baseman Erik Manning were both 1-for-3 and scored a run.

Asbury starter Andrew Marquez with saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits with just one strikeout in four innings.

In game two, it was a rough top of the second inning that did the Bears in. After giving up a single between a groundout and fly out, UPIKE starter Joe Valentino allowed two singles, a double and a walk, compounded with an error at third, to see Asbury take a 4-0 lead.

Asbury added another run in the third inning before the Bears could get on the board in the fifth with a single from Gonzales that backed up two straight batters being hit by a pitch. Asbury scored a run in the next inning and UPIKE tallied one more in the seventh to finish off the scoring.

It was a tough loss to swallow for the Bears as they left 12 runners on base, compared to seven for Asbury. Valentino dropped to 1-1 on the mound after scattering six hits over two innings for five runs with a walk.

Brandon Ray (1-0) helped Asbury to its first win of the season, throwing three shutout innings with just three hits, a pair of walks and a strikeout.

Catcher Cody Chagnon was the only Bear with multiple hits in the loss, going 2-for-3 with a double and walk, while right fielder Corey Adams drove in a run with a single and drew two walks.
