PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Cody Chagnon collected five hits, three RBIs, a triple and two doubles as the University of Pikeville swept a doubleheader against Goshen (Ind.) on Saturday, 6-0 and 9-2, at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Bears improve to 8-3 on the season, their best start since going 7-3 in 2006. It was the first games of the season for the Maple Leafs.
No one wanted to pitch to Chagnon as the junior hit two balls off the left-field fence. The catcher's best performance came in game two when he switched over to the designated hitter spot, finishing 4-for-4 and just a home run away from the cycle with a triple, double, two singles and two RBIs.
UPIKE starting pitcher
Bryce Carden (2-0) was the highlight of game one, scattering three hits for no runs with a pair of strikeouts in five innings of work.
Michael Vaquera threw a shutout sixth inning to hold the lead before UPIKE added three runs to take away the save opportunity.
All the damage was done in two late innings of the opener with the Bears pushing three runs across in the fourth and sixth frames. Designated hitter
Erik Manning led off with a walk in the fourth and Chagnon roped a double to left to score him. Third baseman
Rashawn Farrell added an RBI single and shortstop
Chaz Contreras brought him in with a triple.
After a scoreless fifth, UPIKE got back in the swing of things with right fielder
Corey Adams singling, then coming home from third on a wild pitch. Up 4-0, the Bears got back-to-back sacrifice flies from Contreras and centerfielder
Brad Andrews to wrap up the win.
Pikeville won game two 9-2, but things got interesting after the top of the fifth with Goshen getting within a run at 3-2. After starter Jake Sokol, who lasted 4-1/3 inngs, left the game with a 3-2 lead, relievers
James Brooks and
Logan Sales combined to shutout the Maple Leafs the rest of the way.
With the pair of relievers dealing, UPIKE gave itself three insurance runs in the sixth inning with Andrews coming home from third after a wild throw from the Goshen catcher and Chagnon and pinch hitter Connor Osbourne both adding RBIs.
On the day, Pikeville outhit Goshen 18-8 and had just one error, compared to four for the Maple Leafs that all occurred in the nightcap.
The Bears will play another doubleheader on Sunday, welcoming Cincinnati-Clermont to Johnnie LeMaster Field.
