Alice Lloyd Outlasts Baseball 3-2 in 13 Innings

Box Score
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – In a close 3-2 loss to Alice Lloyd (Ky.), four errors doomed the University of Pikeville, including one that allowed a run, as the Eagles used small ball to take the win in extra innings at Johnnie LeMaster Field on Tuesday.

Alice Lloyd outhit UPIKE 13-10 in 13 innings and committed just one error with solid end-game pitching to move to 3-2 on the season. The Bears drop to 9-5 and look forward to starting Mid-South Conference play at 1 p.m. ET on Friday at St. Catharine (Ky.).

Left fielder Zach Nothwehr and centerfielder Brad Andrews both finished with three hits to lead UPIKE. Andrews used his hits for a double, two stolen bases and two runs scored while also drawing a walk. Nothwehr drove in a pair of runs, including one in the bottom of the 10th inning to extend the game.

Catcher Sean Ryan was impressive behind the plate, making plays at home in four of the 13 innings that kept Alice Lloyd from taking control much earlier. UPIKE starter Joe Valentino was impressive as well in his scheduled three innings, striking out a pair of batters while allowing just one hit.

Neil Dillon threw the final 4-2/3 innings for the Eagles to earn his first win of the young season (1-1), allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout. Michael Vaquera took the loss (1-1), giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk in two innings of work.

Pikeville gained the first lead of the game in the third inning as Andrews singled, stole second, then promptly came home on Nothwehr's hit to center. After a scoreless fourth, the Eagles got even as their pinch runner Corey Dollarhide stole third base before coming all the way home on a wild throw into the outfield.

The game stayed knotted at one run each until the 10th inning when centerfielder Alex Dapkus roped an RBI triple to left field. Luckily for UPIKE Nothwehr stayed hot and brought Andrews home with a single to left.

It wasn't until the 13th inning that Alice Lloyd displayed some small-ball tactics to steal the win.

After back-to-back singles, the Eagles utilized a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. UPIKE opted for an intentional walk to load the bases, but shortstop Austin White put down a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home what would be the winning run in the next at-bat.

UPIKE didn't have an answer in its half of the inning, getting out on three straight fly outs to end the game.
