The Week Ahead for UPIKE Athletics

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – There's plenty going on at home and on the road for the University of Pikeville athletic department the rest of this week with basketball finishing up its regular season and baseball and softball getting in full swing. UPIKE will also host the Mid-South Conference Cheer Championships to finish off a busy week.

Here is a quick look at what is going on around UPIKE athletics, remember to follow @UPIKEAthletics on Twitter for updates:

Thursday, Feb. 27

Women's Basketball vs. No. 4 Campbellsville (Ky.) - 6 p.m. ET

Watch

With two games left in the regular season, the final two games for the UPIKE women (12-16, 6-10 MSC) are very important for their postseason chances and it all starts on Thursday at the East Ky. Expo Center against fourth-ranked Campbellsville (25-3, 14-2 MSC). Only the top eight teams in the MSC standings qualify for the conference tournament and the Bears are currently tied for seventh place. In the first matchup between the two teams this season, the Tigers won 76-62 in Campbellsville.

No. 2 Men's Basketball vs. (RV) Campbellsville (Ky.) - 8 p.m. ET

Watch | Listen

The UPIKE men (25-2, 15-1 MSC) have already wrapped up the MSC Regular-Season Championship and a No. 1 seed at the conference tournament, but they still welcome two good tests to end the season with a team receiving votes and ranked in the NAIA top-25 coming to Pikeville at the end of this week. First is Campbellsville (14-12, 9-7 MSC), which is coming off a triple-overtime loss at St. Catharine in its last MSC game. Earlier this season UPIKE won at Campbellsville 79-61 and with a win can match Lindsey Wilson for the most wins in the history of MSC play with 16.

Friday, Feb. 28

Baseball at St. Catharine - 1 p.m. ET
It's very early in the 2014 season, but UPIKE is already jumping into MSC play with a trip to St. Catharine this weekend. Conference series are played with a single, nine-inning game on the first day, followed by a seven-inning doubleheader. The Bears (9-5) have lost two straight games, but enter Friday with a better overall record than the Patriots at 5-8. St. Catharine is coming off a 3-1 win against Asbury (Ky.) on Tuesday.

Softball at St. Catharine - 1 p.m. ET (DH)
After having two doubleheaders canceled due to inclement weather, the UPIKE softball team will finally take the field at St. Catharine on Friday, which will also serve as both team's MSC openers. The Patriots have had similar luck with six canceled games, but did get two in against IU-Southeast on Tuesday. St. Catharine lost both games of the doubleheader 9-5 and 12-7. Last season UPIKE finished 20-27 overall while the Patriots posted a 22-30 mark.

Saturday, March 1

Baseball at St. Catharine - Noon ET (DH)

The Bears and Patriots will wrap up the first MSC series of the season on Saturday with both teams looking to gain momentum for 2014 with some marks in the win column. Although it's a new year with a lot of new faces, taking a look at last year's results UPIKE finished 18-26-1 overall with St. Catharine posting a 37-21 record.

Softball at (RV) Campbellsville - 1 p.m. ET (DH)

UPIKE will move on from its games at St. Catharine with a trip to last season's MSC Tournament Runner-Up Campbellsville on Saturday. The Tigers received votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll and have have already had a busy start to the 2014 season with an 11-3 record. Included in that mark is a 3-2 win against No. 14 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), 6-3 win against No. 9 Belhaven (Miss.) and 14-0 rout of Union (Ky.) in their last win on Tuesday. UPIKE was 0-2 against Campbellsville in 2013, losing 4-0 and 11-3 at home.

Women's Basketball vs. St. Catharine - 2 p.m. ET

Watch

Saturday's tilt with St. Catharine features a team in the Patriots that are mathematically out of the running for a berth into the postseason and the Bears which are hungry for a win to lock up their trip to Lebanon, Tenn., for the MSC Tournament. UPIKE already has an 86-72 win at St. Catharine (4-19, 1-15 MSC) this season and is hoping for one more against a team that has just one league win in 2014. The Patriots have lost their last three games, including a 101-51 setback at home against Campbellsville on Thursday. It will also be senior day for UPIKE as Callisha Johnson, Brittany Swindall and Brogan Conley play their last games at the expo center.

No. 2 Men's Basketball vs. No. 23 St. Catharine - 4 p.m. ET

Watch | Listen

It's an exciting way to end the 2013-14 regular season with a top-25 matchup at the East Ky. Expo Center. The first game this season between the Bears and Patriots was a classic with Pikeville winning 94-93 in overtime after a pair of free throws from Elisha Justice with less than five seconds on the clock. St. Catharine (17-9, 10-6 MSC) is currently third in the MSC standings which are extremely tight in the second through six spots. The game will also be senior day for UPIKE with Keala King, Devante McClung, Elisha Justice, Bruce Reed and Josh Whitaker playing their last games at home.

Sunday, March 2

Mid-South Conference Cheer Championships - 2:30 p.m. ET

UPIKE won the first MSC Cheer Championship last season, the first that it was recognized as an official sport by the NAIA, and now has the opportunity to repeat as champions at its home facility as the University of Pikeville hosts the 2014 championships at UPIKE Gym on Sunday. The main event will be the team championship, while there will also be a co-ed and all-girl stunt championship awarded. Last season, UPIKE not only took the team title, but also had the MSC Cheerleader of the Year in Jaimie Ward who is still with the team in 2014.
