PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Windy conditions played in Cumberland's (Tenn.) favor on Saturday as it hit four home runs through two wins over the University of Pikeville softball team on Saturday at Paul Butcher Field. The Bulldogs won 10-0 in five innings in game one and 7-1 in the finale.
Cumberland improved to 17-3 overall and 8-2 in the Mid-South Conference with the wins, while the Bears dropped to 1-11 on the season with an 0-8 mark in MSC play.
Courtney Maynard was dominant in the circle in game one, throwing all five innings with six strikeouts while not allowing a run on five hits. She improved to 9-1 on the season, while UPIKE's
Lauren Barnes dropped to 0-4 after allowing five runs on five hits in four innings.
Jessica Lazano (7-1) picked up the win in the finale for the Bulldogs, scattering four hits for one run with a game-high eight strikeouts.
Sydney Morris (0-5) went the distance for the Bears, giving up seven runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
Although Maynard was tough to touch in the opener, left fielder
Sara Browning found some success, going 2-for-2 at the dish and
Courtney Morgan also got on the base paths with a hit. UPIKE got through the first inning with the game tied 0-0, but the Bulldogs got a three-run blast from shortstop Kaleigh Pearce to take control of the game for good.
Right fielder Sarah Murray added another home run in the top of the fourth which ended up being back-to-back long balls as Pearce hit her second of the game in the next at-bat to take a 5-0 lead. Cumberland brought the game to a shortened end with five runs in the fifth inning on five hits.

The three-run deficit didn't last long as the Bulldogs scored two runs on two hits in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh with the help of two doubles.
Pikeville moves on to the Snowbird Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on March 17-19. The Bears open up at 9:30 a.m. ET on Monday with a doubleheader against Waldorf (Iowa).
