CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – For the second straight day, the University of Pikeville softball team was handed a pair of tough losses, being edged by Campbellsville (Ky.) 2-0 and 3-2 on Saturday.
The Bears ran up against a stellar pitching performance in game one as Victoria Decker (6-2) allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts in a complete-game performance. In game two, Pikeville trimmed a 3-0 deficit with a two-run homer by
Eady Beth Connally, but couldn't complete the comeback.
First baseman
Sarah Kinney provided UPIKE's only hit in the 2-0 loss, while Connally paced the offense in game two with two RBIs on her blast to left field. Third baseman
Hollie Hinkle went 2-for-3 and shortstop
Taylor Weeks registered a single to get on base for the homer.
Pikeville (0-4, 0-4 MSC) picked up a pair of solid pitching performances as
Lauren Barnes (0-2) allowed two runs on five hits with a strikeout in game one and
Sydney Morris (0-1) went all six innings in the circle in game two, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Campbellsville's Taylor Wroe (6-0) earned the win in the nightcap, scattering five hits for two runs with seven strikeouts. The Tigers (15-3, 4-0 MSC) got a home run from outfielder Destiney Taul in game one and first baseman Heather Oakley went 2-for-2 in the finale to drive in a run with a double.
The only runs in the 2-0 win came in the third and fourth innings as Oakley hit a double to deep center to score the first and designated player Markie Smith added another RBI double in the next inning.
Kinney led off the fifth inning with a double for UPIKE and moved to third on a passed ball, but the next three batters popped out, struck out and grounded out to strand her.
Campbellsville stayed consistent in the first three innings of game two, scoring a single run in each frame to lead 3-0 into the sixth inning. It was then that Weeks led off with a single and Connally promptly brought them home with a big swing.
The excitement would end there as the Bears failed to get anyone on base in the seventh.
UPIKE is back in action at 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Asbury in Wilmore, Ky.
