Softball Loses Two against Rio Grande, Faces Tough Pitching in Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Rio Grande's (Ohio) Jenna Jones threw a complete-game no hitter with six strikeouts and just one walk to help the RedStorm to two wins on Friday against the University of Pikeville softball team, 2-0 and 7-3 in Mid-South Conference action at Paul Butcher Field.

The Bears return to action with two more league games against Shawnee State (Ohio) at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.

While Jones was obviously dominant, improving to 7-5 on the season, Pikeville's Sydney Morris was good too. Morris went seven innings as well, allowing just three hits for two runs with four strikeouts and four walks.

In game two, Rio Grande's Tiffany Bise (5-2) earned the win, scattering 11 hits for three runs with just one strikeout, while Lauren Barnes (1-5) was stuck with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Shortstop Taylor Weeks was the only batter to register a stat in the box score against Jones, drawing the lone walk. The RedStorm scored their first run in the second inning after a Bear error allowed second baseman Mattie Lanham to run home from third. The second run in the fourth inning came on a leadoff home run from right fielder Haley Gwin.

In game two Pikeville fell victim to two big innings as Rio Grande scored three runs in the second inning and three more in the top of the fifth to build a 6-0 lead. UPIKE got on the scoreboard for the first time on the day in the bottom half of the inning as catcher Eady Beth Connally hit an RBI single and Courtney Morgan delivered a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to four.

Nothing changed in the sixth inning, but the teams traded runs in the final frame to end up with the 7-3 final score.
