PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- After coming into the game with matching 5-5 record in Mid-South Conference play, No. 15 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) pulled off a doubleheader sweep with a pair of two-run wins over the University of Pikeville baseball team on Saturday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Bears (17-15, 5-7 MSC) lost game one 4-2 and dropped the finale 8-6 and will return to action on Tuesday at Cincinnati-Clermont in Batavia, Ohio.
Catcher
Cody Chagnon had a big day at the dish with four hits in the two games combined with a home run (4), two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated player
Sean Ryan went 2-for-4 in the opener with an RBI and outfielder
Zach Nothwehr tallied three hits in the finale with an RBI and run scored.
Michael Vaquera (2-3) took the opening loss after scattering 10 hits for four runs in 6-1/3 innings.
Joe Valentino and
Logan Sales combined to shut out the Blue Raiders the rest of the way, but the Bears couldn't come up with any enough runs late in the game.
It was
Corey Gilligan (3-2) suffering the loss in game two, giving up seven runs on eight hits in five innings of work, including two home runs from Lindsey Wilson third baseman Mitchell Osnowtiz which accounted for four of the runs.
Luke Shearrow (1-2) and Matt Lashlee (1-4) tallied the wins for the Blue Raiders(18-16, 7-5 MSC), while Jason Turner picked up his first save of the season in relief for Shearrow in the opener.
With an RBI single and two-run double, Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning to start the morning. After that flurry of runs, neither team could muster any offense over the next five innings. Finally in the seventh, right fielder Alex Bautista hit an RBI double for the Blue Raiders and Ryan answered with a single to center to make it a 4-1 game.
Another scoreless frame went by in the eighth, leading up to Pikeville's comeback effort in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and runners on first and third, centerfielder
Brad Andrews singled home shortstop
Chaz Contreras.
Nothwehr followed that up with a single to load the bases, but first baseman
Nicolas Gonzales couldn't sneak his groundball past the shortstop as Michael Rosario threw over to first baseman Nick Hoffman to end the rally.
Once again there was a lot of action to open the game in the finale as Osnowitz hit a two run homer, followed by a two run single by Rosario to put Lindsey Wilson up 4-0. Pikeville fought back with a run in its half of the inning with an RBI single from Chagnon.
Over the next three frames the Bears continued to chip away at the lead, scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings to trail 4-3 heading into the fifth. But as quick as it had battled back, Lindsey Wilson was there with an answer as Osnowitz roped another two-run shot and Bautista hustled home on a wild pitch to go back up by four.
Left fielder Derek Shugart made it five in the seventh inning as he led off with a triple and came home on an Osnowitz single to center. Looking to make one last push, Chagnon got the Bears off to a good start with a leadoff home run and after two errors, pinch hitter
Rashawn Farrell drove home
Corey Adams to make it an 8-5 game.
With runners on first and third once again, pinch hitter
Connor Osborne was able to hit a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to two, but Nothwehr grounded out the second to end the game.
Osnowitz finished his day for Lindsey Wilson with five hits, five RBIs and a pair of home runs, while Bautista drove in three runs with his two doubles in game one.
