LEBANON, Tenn. – A pair of quick starts by Cumberland (Tenn.) doomed the University of Pikeville baseball team on Saturday as it lost both games of a doubleheader, 6-1 and 18-3, at Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bulldogs put together three runs on four hits in the first inning of the opener, which ended up being enough for the win even though they added three more runs late in the game. Both teams ended up with 11 hits, but none of UPIKE's were for extra bases and it committed three errors.

Catcher Cody Chagnon paced Pikeville at the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI and third baseman Erik Manning tallied two hits with a run scored. Corey Gilligan (3-5) took the loss on the mound after giving up six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in six innings. Only three of the scores were earned.

Jake Collier (4-3) went the distance for Cumberland, allowing just the one run on 11 hits with two strikeouts.

Once again, the Bulldogs struck for three runs in the first inning of game two, but to make matters worse, they hit two three-run home runs in the second. First baseman Brady North hit the first to make it a 6-0 game and designated hitter Josciel Veras connected on the second to give Cumberland an early nine-run lead.

Pikeville eventually tallied three runs in the top of the fourth inning, started by Chagnon's two-run double, but the rally was matched with three Bulldogs runs in their half of the inning. Trailing 12-3, UPIKE saw the Bulldogs score six more runs over the next two innings.

Michael Vaquera (2-4) took the loss in game two after allowing nine runs on nine hits in 1-2/3 innings, while Stevie Smith (6-1) picked up the win after allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

Other than Chagnon, Corey Adams was the only other Bear to drive in a run as he went 2-for-3 at the dish. UPIKE returns to action at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, hosting Berea (Ky.) at 2 p.m. ET on Johnnie LeMaster Field.
